Describing Festival Celebrations for IELTS

A very happy Sping Festival and year of the Monkey to all those celebrating at the moment.

You may be asked to describe a festive occasion or a memorial event in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam.

How would you answer?

What excellent words might you want to use?

What words might you use that are low level English and are therefore best avoided while using a synonym instead?

(Let me give you a clue: nice, happy, interesting, good are not very descriptive so you would lose the opportunity to show off better descriptive words such as pleasant, enjoyable, fascinating and amazing 😉 )

You would want to answer the questions they ask, such as:

CNY dancingWhen was it?

Where was it?

Who was with you?

What made it so memorable?

What was your favourite part?

So I might say.

This year I was privileged to spend Chinese New Year with one of my Chinese families, while I was visiting Newcastle a couple of weeks ago. The parents of my friend had just arrived and so we could all be together for one day before I had to leave. We attended an event put on locally and saw great performances of dancing and singing and playing musical instruments. We also ate vast quantities of superb Chinese food. I left very uplifted.

My friend’s dad is an amazing chef and so when I returned the next morning, 5 dishes and dozens of dumplings had been cooked and were waiting for me. I love all the ‘real’ Chinese food, with all its fresh vegetables and lovely colours, as it reminds me of my time in China, and jiaozi or Northern Chinese dumplings are one of my favourite foods.

My favourite part was as we all sat round the table, eating and talking and being excited at the arrival of my friend’s first baby, I felt so content and blessed to know this family, be able to communicate with them and join in for this special celebration. If I hadn’t have delayed my return back home, I would have missed this special day.
